Another way to give encouragement

At any given moment, every person on the planet could use a little encouragement. Stop now and take a moment to think about what I just said. At any given moment, every person on the planet could use a little encouragement.

Imagine going about your day today, keeping that in mind. As you pay for your groceries, as you fill up your car with gas and watch other customers come in, as you pick up your children from school, whatever it is you are doing that causes you to be near other people remember that they could use your encouragement.

Encouragement can come in many forms. It can come in the form of a favor, a compliment, or an act of generosity, but today I want us to be thinking about giving encouragement in what may sound like a passive way, by way of your thoughts and your attention. By simply showing up, fully present and aware of another person and then taking it a step further and thinking something positive for that other person, you are giving encouragement.

Test out what I am saying. Notice the people around you, really notice them, each person as an individual. After you notice that person, give the gift of creating a positive thought for that person. It could be as simple as, “He matters” or “She brings value to this place.” Watch what happens in you, as you put in the effort to create a positive thought about that other person.

One of the things I have been doing is applying this habit to those who are unkind to me. When someone is rude, rather than reacting in my old ways, I pause, notice that person, as an individual and then think a positive thought, as my gift of encouragement to that person. One of the best thoughts that works for me is to think the thought, “He is doing the best that he can right now.” I choose that thought and then allow myself the time and attention to really believe it, not just think it. By choosing that thought it gives unspoken encouragement to the other person and it keeps my heart soft and kind as well.

I get encouragement when I put in the effort to give encouragement in this way, so it’s a win/win.

Try it today. Notice the people around you and one by one, choose positive thoughts of encouragement for each person. You may feel compelled to verbally express the those thoughts and if that’s the case, go for it, but make no mistake, simply thinking positive things about others goes a long way and it gives out encouraging energy!

Have an amazing week cultivating encouragement for everyone around you!
