“Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.”

Where does happiness come from? Many books out there address this question, like The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. The basis of most books on the subject of happiness shares the same message that happiness comes from within. If this is true, which I believe it is, what can we do to create more happiness in our lives?

One thing that is very important in having happiness is that you honor yourself. I recently realized I was a bit lacking in the area of having fun. I had been so preoccupied with work, responsibilities, and taking care of things that I had neglected to have fun, so I made two lists. One list was for all the things that I enjoy doing that are fun to me, like socializing, going out to eat with family and friends, dancing, hiking, art projects, shopping, and more.

The other list is for all the things that make me feel good after doing them, such as yoga, running, cleaning my house, praying or meditating, and more. Those are things that aren’t necessarily fun at the time, but they are an investment that causes me to feel good about myself afterward. I have made it a point to do one thing from each list every day. Since I have begun this, I have been much happier and enjoying my days more and more. I am more joyful because I am honoring myself.

Where are you on your happiness chart? What are you doing every day to honor yourself? Make your lists of fun and things that make you feel good, and be sure to do at least one from each list. Honor yourself and create more happiness and enjoyment. You deserve it!
