Influence

On Today’s Monday Motivation, Corry discusses Influence with Doru Bere.

Doru Bere was born in Communist Romania, where he underwent a broad education in music and the arts. At the age of 22 he acted on his life-long dream of taking his family to freedom. Risking his personal safety and sacrificing every resource he had, Doru left Romania, sought political asylum in Austria and two years later immigrated to the United States.

For the last 33 years he has lived in the United States area, where he helps entrepreneurs, businesses and organizations craft meaningful brands in the marketplace by combining brand strategy with the discipline of design. DREAMBOX exists to bring new life to brands and new brands to life.

“You can never really live anyone else’s life, not even your child’s. The Influence you exert is through your own life, and what you’ve become yourself.”

Eleanor Roosevelt

Influence

I received a surprise package in the mail recently that had a deep impact on me. The package came from a friend Rusty, who I hadn’t seen in over a year; someone I met through business and quickly developed a respect and fondness for. The package included a book and a handwritten letter addressed to both my husband and me. The letter was a complete and total surprise, filled with encouraging and affirming words for what my husband and I have been building in both of our businesses.

I was so touched to read his kind words and was taken back at how much Rusty had noticed about what we were doing. This gesture of kindness and affirmation provoked my attention on two levels. One is in how Rusty affected me and two is how Stephen and I affected Rusty. This is how powerful influence is. We never know who will be impacted by our lives. We never know who is noticing what we’re doing and who we are.

Somehow, someway, while Stephen and I were going about our journey of courage, authentic expression, and entrepreneurship it clearly had an impact on Rusty and compelled him to express that to us. His willingness to express and encourage us has given me reassurance and encouragement to fuel me to continue on and follow my heart in my journey for purpose and contribution.

I am in such amazement at the connection and influence we all have on each other, whether we are aware of it or not. Who we are and what we do really does matter. It is being witnessed. It is influencing and impacting others. Whose lives are you influencing? Take a moment to consider who is watching and being influenced by you. Now, who is influencing you? Take notice because influence is occurring, in even the briefest moments. One act of kindness is being witnessed by onlookers and then re-told to many others, potentially hundreds, thousands, and with social media millions.

So, I encourage you today to take notice of your life and your decisions. Have courage to follow your heart and your dreams. It is not just about us fulfilling our dreams. It is also about those watching, witnessing, and being inspired to fulfill their dreams. When we follow our heart, we are encouraging others to do the same. Be like Rusty, willing to share your words of encouragement and affirmation to others.
