“Choice of attention – to pay attention to this and ignore that – is to the inner life what choice of action is to the outer. In both cases, a man is responsible for his choice and must accept the consequences, whatever they may be.”
W. H. Auden
Attention is like a magnet. It will draw in whatever you give your attention to. Therefore, pay attention to what you pay attention to. Your attention is going to be on something, whether you are purposeful with it or not. Don’t allow your attention to be on autopilot, taken over by whatever comes your way. Choose where and how you invest it.
Throughout your day take notice of where your attention is. Is it being given over to productive thoughts of creativity, appreciation, and contribution? Or is it being given over to disappointment, obstacles, and complaining? Think of your attention like any other resource. Use it wisely. Let your attention be an investment, not a liability. Know that whatever you put your attention on will grow.
You know the saying, “Give him an inch, he’ll take a mile.” That is what happens with our attention, so make sure you are spending it on an area you want to see grow. Know this; whatever you choose to focus on will expand. When you recognize that your attention has been given over to unproductive things, such as complaining, worry, gossip, or fear, simply shift your attention onto whatever it is that you would like more of, love, joy, gratitude, peace, contribution, creativity, harmony, generosity, fun, and happiness. Plan ahead. Start your day out on the right track by choosing to be purposeful in what you give your attention to and experience a great sense of empowerment and improved results.
Do it now, write down what you are willing to give your attention to today and like a magnet, watch how your attention will be drawn to those things you wrote down.
