“The supreme value is not the future but the present. Whoever builds a house for future happiness builds a prison for the present.”

One wet fall morning my cousin Sara and I were running along Folsom Lake. She asked me if I lived in the past, present or the future. I knew my answer immediately. My thoughts were consumed with the future. Her question really got my attention. In answering her, I recognized what had been robbing my joy. The solution was clear – Live in the present. Let go of the past and do not be concerned with the future. The problem of expending our thoughts on the past or the future is that we trade something that doesn’t exist for what does. We cannot change our past and there is no guarantee we will have a future, but what we can be certain of is, we have this moment.
Worry is the biggest culprit in stealing our present moment. Think of some of the biggest worries most of us struggle with – worries about money. Even if you are going bankrupt, you rob yourself of the present reality when you get stuck on what will happen in the future. So what would it take to enjoy this moment? It is as simple as that. When we decide to be present we ignite our awareness and it automatically brings us present. Being present causes sadness, longing, and regret to vanish. Being present provides space for peace, joy, appreciation, and happiness.
I encourage you to enjoy your life by being present with this moment and appreciate that you have it. Enjoy this moment right now. Use your 5 senses. Write down what you hear, see, taste, feel, and smell. Take a few deep breaths and take in your surroundings. You are probably starting to feel some appreciation come to you. Write down the things you appreciate. There, you are present in this moment. You can do this any time you feel yourself going into your past or considering your future. Make being present a daily habit and enjoy all that it creates for you.
